Isla Montessori School: Empowering a Community Through Education

2025

In the heart of the Northern Mariana Islands, Isla Montessori School is a beacon of hope, equity, and possibility for children and families in an underserved region. Founded in 2018 by passionate parents and educators, the school offers an authentic Montessori education that transcends barriers of race, income, and background—an inclusive, nurturing space where every child is seen, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.

More than a school, Isla Montessori is a living reflection of the island's spirit. By weaving Chamorro and Carolinian languages, arts, and traditions into the fabric of daily learning, students grow deeply rooted in their cultural identity while cultivating the curiosity and independence that are hallmarks of the Montessori method. Scientific exploration of the island’s natural environment, lessons in peace, and whole-child development are integral to the school's mission to foster thoughtful, compassionate citizens.

Amid the economic and geographic challenges faced by the CNMI—where over a third of families live in poverty—Isla Montessori stands as a critical educational lifeline. The school’s current initiative to improve infrastructure, including the construction of essential facilities, will not only enhance safety and accessibility but also ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn in an environment that supports their dignity, growth, and success. MGGF's grant will help fund an additional toilet that is required by law based on their number of students. This will ensure they can continue to increase enrollment and ensure future sustainability of their program.

The school’s vision is clear: to transform education on the islands, one child at a time, and to cultivate generations of learners who are confident, connected, and ready to build a better future.
