Mountain Village Charter

The mission of Mountain Village Charter School is to engage students in experiences that integrate natural environments with the Montessori curriculum, igniting achievement in academic, social-emotional and physical development.

Based in Plymouth, New Hampshire, USA is in an area defined as a rural area that has been identified as an “isolated area of distress” by the Northern Border Regional Commission, which bases this classification on local economic and demographic data.

Mountain Village Charter School is a public, nature-based Montessori school serving 109 children in Grades 1-8 in rural Plymouth, New Hampshire. Our Montessori approach is evident in our school environment, with mixed age class groupings, an uninterrupted two hour morning work period, and a full complement of Montessori materials available in all classrooms. Respect, grace, and courtesy characterize interactions between children and adults, and activities are planned with respect for the human development process, as well as children’s independence, freedom, and growth.

As a nature-based school, MVCS students spend a third of each school day outdoors. A visitor to our campus might see children reading in hammocks, leaping across a creek, building forts and bridges, or sledding down a hillside. Maria Montessori wrote about the vital importance of children’s connection to the natural world, and at Mountain Village we support this connection by providing children with extensive, immersive time in nature each day.
